John Beard papers, 1843-1852, 1882.

The collection consists of papers relating mainly to John Beard as U.S. Marshal for the District of East Florida from 1843-1852. The letters concern mostly land claims and pension requests. Of particular interest are a letter from Beard to George R. Fairbanks, dated February 7, 1847, discussing the sale of land in East Florida, the benefits derived from the sale, and the disorganization of the land sales process and an 1882 letter from Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. J.J.) Dickison to George R. Fairbanks discussing matters relating to the Civil War in Florida.

Lawyer, land-holder, agent and dealer in real estate, writer, military officer. Rainsford Fairbanks was born in 1817, and died in 1942. He was Clerk of the Superior Court, a State Senator, a promotor of Southern Universities, a newspaper editor, a writer of Florida history, and a Major and Quartermaster during the American Civil War.
